Under the direction of AIUM member J. Christian Fox, MD, the University of California, Irvine (UCI), is hosting a free bedside ultrasound symposium for medical students throughout California on May 20 at the medical school campus. The Ultrafest will provide hands-on workshops in emergency medicine, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, anesthesia, cardiology, sports medicine, and more. The symposium provides an incredible opportunity for students to learn and improve bedside ultrasound skills in multiple fields.
Dr Fox and several medical students attended the AIUM Annual Convention earlier this month and participated in the Ultrasound in Medical Education Interest Group meeting. Third-year medical student Kiah Bertoglio enthusiastically reported to the group that UCI began offering an ultrasound elective in which students received additional ultrasound lectures and hands-on training. Although the course didn't offer credit and was purely voluntary, 40 students ate it up--talk about high interest!
The Ultrasound in Medical Education Interest Group was created to foster communication about integrating ultrasound into medial school curricula. What are other medical schools doing to promote interest in ultrasound among their students? Post your experience on the Ultrasound 2013 Facebook Page, or send us a message.
